Under 14 Nationals - Day 1 and 2 Recap
Published Sat 16 Apr 2022
Find out how our Boys and Girls are performing at the Under 14 Nationals in our recap of the first two days of competition.
Despite showing some early promise, the opening day was a tough one for the Under 14 boys.
Our first innings in both games were very strong, including a couple of hits over the fence, before we took the foot off the gas and let the opposition run over us in both games. The opening game was a 7-16 loss, with the second a 5-14 loss.
However, we had some amazing plays in the field, including memorable pick offs by our incredible catchers. The pitchers also did an amazing job, keeping the opposition swinging. However, our defence in the field ultimately let us down.
The boys seemed pumped early on Day 2, and we again started well in the first game. An amazing batting performance had the scores level, with extra time needed to decide the game. Unfortunately, the opposition eventually ran us down in a tightly fought contest 8-9.
The second game was a different story, with our boys showing up to play. Victoria were on top from the start, with a number of good hits getting our players to second or third base before the following batter knocked them in to score. Our aggressive base running made a difference as well. Lachie Rossouw pitched the entire game, and also put one over the fence in a 14-9 win.
The Under 14 Girls had a great start on Day 1, winning 18 to 3 against ACT.
We backed this up with strong performance against South Australia, where we lea 6-3 early on, but the final innings cost us the game, ultimately going down 9-6.
Our girls certainly tried their hardest, but a few mistakes cost us, and we will improve as a result and we can be proud of how far this team has come from the trial stage. There is still room for improvement, and we should see better performances throughout the tournament.
Victoria took on NSW Country Sliders in their opening game on Day 2, and notched up a good win to start the day. The solid fielding for most of the game was a highlight, while in the batting we had three great hits to deep outfield, with one homerun contributing to the 8-5 win.
In back-to-back games, we then took on NSW Metro Strikers, and despite playing well throughout the game, we ultimately fell to a stronger opponent 11-3. However, our players stayed up the whole game and never gave up. At the end of Day 2, the girls have a 2-2 record and sit fourth on the ladder.
